Reconstruction of I-59

Project Name

Reconstruction of I-59

Location

Fort Payne, Alabama

Owner

Alabama Department of Transportation

Project Details

Wiregrass Construction has recently completed a remarkable feat by reconstructing eight miles of I-59 in Dekalb County, Alabama. I-59 connects Birmingham to Chattanooga and is one of the busiest interstates in the state. The Alabama Department of Transportation invited both concrete and asphalt bids for this project and Wiregrass Construction was chosen as a result of their cost-effective asphalt solution.

During the course of the project, it was discovered that the existing roadbed material would not meet specifications. The company quickly reacted by removing and backfilling two feet of the roadway, using the existing pavement as embankment material. Through their efforts, the company was able to produce smooth, quality asphalt pavement an impressive 80 days ahead of schedule and won the National Asphalt Pavement Association – 2022 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction.
