In this skilled craft position, you will be responsible for performing various duties related to asphalt construction projects. These duties may include operating equipment such as skid steers, pavers, asphalt distributors, rollers, or shuttle buggies, as well as performing manual tasks like raking and shoveling. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the safe and efficient completion of asphalt construction projects.

Key Duties:

  • Prepare construction sites by cleaning and eliminating potential hazards.
  • Use rakes, shovels, or other tools to handle gravel, dirt, and other materials.
  • Assist equipment operators by signaling and facilitating alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials.
  • Load, unload, and identify materials or tools as per project plans or specifications.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to accurately layout work areas.
  • Erect or dismantle temporary structures, such as braces, traffic barricades, ramps, etc.
  • Immediately report any potential safety or equipment issues to the department lead.
  • Adhere to processes and procedures correctly.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, shoes, and personal protective equipment.
  • Perform proper pre-start and daily maintenance, including lubrication of equipment.
  • Operate equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Follow directions from the foreman and superintendents.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Notify the supervisor of any equipment repair needs.
  • Perform tire pressure checks and monitor engine gauges.
  • Interact with construction general laborers and crew members to ensure grade specifications are met.
  • Control air and water output of compressors and pumps by turning valves.
  • Adjust control wheels, handles, and pedals to operate machinery and control attachments.
  • Understand production and quantity requirements.
  • Schedule work and maintain production efficiency.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties within other crafts.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Previous experience as an experienced Asphalt Crewman is essential; this is not an entry-level position.
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.
  • One to three years or more of industry-related experience, with a focus on roads, highways, and bridges.

Physical Demands:

  • Constant physical effort, including standing for extended periods and performing tasks like stooping, bending, and crouching.
  • Frequent use of hands overhead, often while operating hand power tools.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a frequent basis, with assistance for weights up to 150 pounds.
  • Alertness and awareness of activities on the construction site, including other workers, equipment, and mobile machinery.
  • Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, exposed to varying weather conditions.
  • Safe climbing on and off heavy mobile equipment.

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Periodic exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
  • Regular proximity to heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Exposure to substances commonly found on construction sites, such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel.

The posted salary or pay compensation ranges are approximate and dependent on applicable experience and qualifications. Upper ranges are flexible.
